I'm the Director of UNMC Nurse-Midwives in Omaha, Nebraska.  I received my Certificate in
Nurse-Midwifery from FNS through CNEP in July of 1998 and finished my Master's in
Nursing in January of 1999 from Case Western Reserve University. I have been in
Obstetrics for most of my nursing career since the early 1980's (before nurse midwives
were recognized in the state of Nebraska).  We have four CNMs in our practice and a
women's health nurse practitioner.  We educate medical students, nursing students,
advanced practice nursing students, PA's and will soon be working more closely
supervising residents in vaginal births.  We have a private practice with around 375
deliveries a year.

Personal stuff: I'm a mother of three children, a 14yr. old boy and twins that are twelve years
old that are boy/girl.  I've been married for almost 16 years.  My husband, Eric is studying to
be a teacher. My husband and I are active working with the youth group at our parish; we
volunteer at school and I love music and singing.

Leissa Roberts, CNM
Board Member
Leissa Roberts began her career as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) in 1993 with BirthCare
HealthCare (BCHC) at the University of Utah's College of Nursing Faculty Practice.  At the
present time she is the Clinical Director of BCHC and an Associate Professor (Clinical).
Leissa practices Nurse-Midwifery and Women's Health at four locations with the University
and manages the Nurse-Midwifery and WHNP services at these clinic sites.  Sites include
an insured population, teen mother program and a large ethnically diverse and under
served population. The BCHC CNM's & WHNP's provide over 7000 OP visits per year
and assist at nearly 450 births per year.  We have initiated the Centering Pregnancy Model of
care in our Hispanic population.  In 2000 Leissa developed an obstetrical triage program at
University of Utah Hospital that quickly moved from a 2 bed unit to a 4 bed unit. Leissa is
also interested in quality outcomes and helped develop the current ACNM bench marking
tool. She and a colleague also developed a relational database in Access to create an
automated birth log. BCHC is currently using this database to capture outcome statistics
and for provider and program profiling. To learn more about this database see [Roberts, L.
A. & Sward, K. (Jan/Feb 2001) Birth Center Outcomes Reported Through Automated
Technology. JOGNN Clinical Issues].  Leissa served as a board member for the
Nurse-Midwifery Board in Utah for 10 years.  She is the current Utah Chapter Chair for
ACNM.  She is also on the Perinatal Task Force for the State of Utah.
